Why Waste Is A Problem

Dorset alone produces over 220,000 tonnes of household waste every year. That is about half a tonne or equivalent to half a car of household waste per person. The gradual annual increase alone would cover a football pitch 3 feet deep.

Waste can cause local pollution and contribute towards global warming, therefore we need to look at ways to minimise harm to our environment. Collecting, treating and disposing of Dorset’s waste currently costs 10 million pounds per year. That is £60 for every household. Unfortunately this cost will continue to rise due to the increasing amount of waste and tighter environmental controls.

Why Change Is Needed

We simple can’t continue as we are. We have to make some changes to the way we deal with household waste. Current landfill sites are filling up and councils are looking for more environmentally friendly ways to deal with waste. The Government has set new targets requiring councils to recycle, compost and recover more. They require councils to greatly reduce the waste which goes to landfill in the future.

On a positive note, recycling levels in Dorset are among the best in the country. But, we will still have to do a lot more to meet the new targets. We currently recycle or compost nearly a third of our waste, the rest goes to landfill. By 2020 there will be a lot more waste and sending waste to landfills will be limited. We will have to find other ways of dealing with some of our waste.
