Swanage Weather and Seasons

Just like anywhere else in the UK, in Swanage weather and Seasons is always a popular talking point. We Brits do love to talk about the weather, although some may say that we are rather hard to please at times.

With four distinct seasons, it’s possible to experience a bit of everything in the UK. From the wet and cold, to the dry and hot. Without a doubt, when planning a trip anywhere in the UK it’s always a wise idea to pack one of everything – just in case. Late spring through to early autumn is the most popular time for people to travel to Swanage, because temperatures are generally a little warmer allowing for more outdoor adventures.

Spring

During spring (Mar-May) Swanage weather can be a little unpredictable at times. Having both an umbrella and warm jacket to hand would successfully cover all eventualities. Some years spring has been really warm over the Easter break, but then others have been bitterly cold. Local businesses are slowly coming back to life around this time of year if they’ve been closed for the winter. There are not so many tourists around at this time of the year, making it the ideal opportunity to grab a bargain on accommodation in the area.

Summer

Being a popular seaside town, Swanage attracts a lot of families, couples and small groups during the peak season (July-Aug). The town has a real traditional feel and really comes alive when visitors arrive. When the temperatures reach their highest during the summer (June-Aug) local beaches such as Lulworth Cove are a magnet for sun worshippers. The restaurants and bars in town becomes a social meeting ground for those who prefer to seek out shade from the hot midday heat. Bars and restaurants are often full to capacity both day and night during these months. Booking a table in advance is advised unless you are happy to wait your turn.

Autumn

Swanage weather in autumn (Sept-Nov) is very similar to spring in many ways. Some days can be bright and sunny with temperatures reaching 13C on average. On the other hand other days can be wet, foggy and a lot cooler.  It’s important to remember that there are still lots of things to do in Swange even during the cooler months. You simply just have to be prepared to get a bit wet and cold sometimes during autumn.

Swanage Weather in The Winter

Winter (Dec-Feb) has the coldest months in Swanage and the UK in general. Ground frosts are very common and snow often makes an appearance at some point. The sea can also become very rough with strong rip currents. As a seaside town, Swanage does shut down to a certain degree during the winter months. However, many bars, pubs, restaurants and cafes continue business as usual for the local town residents. Swanage Beach and the surrounding coastline is still a beautiful place to walk during the colder months. You just need to be extra careful on the coastal path because winds can be strong and sea rough.
